Help Find a Cure by Volunteering for Loveland’s Walk MS on May 9 at Chapungu Sculpture Park at Centerra

Published: April 15, 2009

LOVELAND, CO – April 15, 2009 – Join the driving force behind the movement by volunteering for Loveland’s Walk MS on Saturday, May 9 at Chapungu Sculpture Park, located east of The Promenade Shops at Centerra. The Colorado Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is looking for approximately 50 volunteers to assist with the Loveland event either as individuals or as part of a group.

Walk MS raises funds and increases awareness of multiple sclerosis (MS), which plagues more than 9,000 people in Colorado – one of the highest incidences in the United States. The Loveland Walk MS funds local programs and services for those living with multiple sclerosis in our community. Last year, more than 500 walkers participated in the 2008 Loveland Walk MS, raising over $50,000 for a cure.

Volunteers’ time and talent are needed for set up and break down as well as for event day activities.

The Loveland Walk MS begins at 9:00 a.m. with registration starting at 8:00 a.m. In addition to the 1.5 mile walking loop amidst beautiful African stone sculptures, the event will include music, entertainment, refreshments, and distribution of information. Prizes will also be given away as the Colorado Chapter celebrates its 50th year of service.

This will be the second Loveland Walk MS at Chapungu Sculpture Park at Centerra, which features 82 stone sculptures from the Shona tribe of Zimbabwe, Africa. The park’s trail is fully accessible and offers shade trees, water features and park benches for seating. Like last year, the walk will be a green event with recycling bins and waste reduction efforts.

To volunteer for Loveland Walk MS, call 970-482-5016 or email allison.hines@nmss.org. Volunteers can participate as individuals, form a team or join an existing team. The Colorado Chapter relies on 500 volunteers each year to assist with the 10 walks that take place across Colorado in May.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from reduced or lost mobility to numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and 2.5 million worldwide.
